Description:

Lapakahi State Historical Park preserves many archaeological sites on this 279 acre coastal property on the northwest side of the Big Island (North Kohala District).

Visitors can walk the Lapakahi Village Interpretive Trail, a 1.1 mile loop, with a printed brochure that describes 19 numbered and significant sites along the path. The map shows the way clearly on a clockwise loop that begins at the simple visitor center. Don’t leave the trail or disturb structures during your hike. The trail doesn’t come close to exploring the entire property or the 1.5 mile long shoreline, but it shows off the densest part of the development. This village dates back to 1300 CE and is one of the best preserved ancient villages on the island.

There is not much sand at the beach, and towels and beach chairs are not permitted anyway so it’s not a sunbathing beach. Swimming and snorkeling is allowed here, but you’ll have to look for the small signed water entrance if you want to get in. Few people visit this park for getting into the water but the snorkeling can be good when the waves are small. Wear sunscreen without nano-particles so the coral won’t get damaged.
